Dr.K.REMA DEVI, Ph.D., D.Sc.
Dr.K.Rema Devi retired as a Sr.Scientist of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) having served as the Head of office of both the Regional Centres, The Southern Regional Centre and the Marine Biology Regional Centre, ZSI in Chennai.
She obtained her M.Sc. in Zoology from Madurai University and joined ZSI in April 1976 which department she served for 36 years until her retirement in Jan. 2012. Her field of specialization was Fish Taxonomy and Diversity. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in 1986 for her study on the “Systematics and Biology of the Fishes of the Genus Oxyurichthys (Family : Gobiidae) of Ennore Estuary, Madras” under the guidance of the renowned ichthyologist Late Dr.A.G.K.Menon. Subsequently she has been working on fishes from various parts of the country, collected and deposited in the Regional Centres of the Zoological Survey of India. She has published around 114 papers ( 4 in international journals and 2 monographs ) including the descriptions of eighteen new species, several new distributional records, papers resolving taxonomic ambiguities and ichthyofaunal reports. Further several identification services to outside researchers and Institutions have been rendered and two freshwater fishes a Mesonemacheilus and Tor sp. have been named after her. She was awarded the D.Sc degree by the University of Madras in Nov. 2011.
Till recently she has been serving as the Regional Co-Chair of the FFSG ( Freshwater Fish Specialist Group) of IUCN WI, for South Asia and has attended three meetings and workshops in Chester U.K. and presented the status report of the Freshwater Fishes of the Region and also contributed to the preparation of the Sampled Red List Index of the Freshwater Fishes of India.
She is a Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society, Journal of Threatened Taxa , Taprobanica and ZSI journals.
She is a recognized Guide of the University of Madras and has guided four students for their Ph.D. thesis.
She was affected by polio in her childhood. 50 to 55 years back itself her father was well aware of the benefits of hydrotherapy. He arranged a small tub in their house to make her to do exercises under water. That helped her a lot in improving her physical condition. With the great support of her parents and her husband Mr T M Singaravel, Director, R.K.M. Powergen Pvt Ltd she could achieve so many things in her life. This benevolent couple is associated with so many service activities.

Mrs Uthira Ramachandran
Mrs Uthira Ramachandran is the wife of Commodore KP Ramachandran, a distinguished retired senior officer from the Indian Navy. In the long span of over 32 years in the Indian Navy, Uthira has been actively involved in the Welfare activities of Naval families in various capacities in the Naval Wives Welfare Association(NWWA).
Noteworthy amongst them are the following:
(I) started a computer centre and ran it for over two years for Naval community in Mumbai.
(II) was a member of the Executive committee as the Treasurer of the NWWA at Visakhapatnam.
(iii) was instrumental in organising collection and provision of relief funds and materials during Kargil war and Tsunami.(iii) As the First President of NWWA Karwar, she started abinitio, a large no of welfare activities which includes starting of a Kindergarten, Primary (inaugurated by Mrs Sonia Gandhi) and Secondary school leading up to the 12th standard.
(iv) She was instrumental, as the wife of the commanding officer of the ship, in keeping up the Morale of Naval families while their husbands were out at sea on Navy duties.
Prior to her marriage, she was working with Food Corporation of India, which job she had to relinquish due to her husbands' Nature of work involving frequent transfers.
Having suffered a Polio attack at the age of three which affected her Right hand and Left leg, she utilised the facilities available with the Navy in all its stations, and went through rigorous swimming achieving heart warming success without any coach or organised training. She is a keen Propagator of Hydro Therapy for all differently abled children. She has also carried out counselling of polio affected people in her private capacity on occasions.
With her sole untiring efforts, she has won the Silver medal in the National Paralympic swimming competition 2011 held at Kolhapur.
She is keen on gardening amongst other interests.
Uthira has a small family with a loving husband, two sons (Elder one a Merchant Navy officer, Younger one with TCS) and an affectionate daughter in law(Teaching Mathematics at Kodai International School).

From 2006, Standard Chartered Scope Int’l Pvt. Ltd., Chennai as a Senior Manager in Trade Services.
Sports Career:
Received Most encouraging Sports Person Award in Corporate Sports Olympiad in 2010
Won the Bronze medal in Corporate Sports Olympiad -2011 in 100 metre freestyle- SwimmingWon 3 gold medals in 11th National Paralympic Swimming Championship -2011 held at Kolhapur Maharashtra from 9th Dec.’11 to 12th Dec.’11 in 50mt freestyle, 50mt backstroke, 50mt breast stroke and also won the Individual Championship under S1-Women-Senior category.
Other Activities:
Founder of Yes We Too Can Movement (Which is meant for encouraging the challenged people to take part in Sports with an emphasis on Swimming. The main objective of this movement is to help physically challenged to maintain their health through physical activity by participation in sports.
